How to Make (and Extend) Homemade Hand Soap

Extending the life of certain products that we purchase at the store is a simple way to save money. I have found hand soap one of the quickest and easiest ways to save money. The other thing that is extremely simple is learning how to make homemade hand soap.

Living in a household of 7 people, we use a lot of soap ! Nothing drives me crazier than walking into the bathroom to find globs of wasted soap in the sink. So I started diluting my soap. I started by simply adding water to my soap container.

I now get a large bowl, and dump my soap into it. Next, add water a cup at a time. Gently stir the mixture to incorporate the two. Depending upon how liquidy you want you soap determines how much water you should add.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to use actual hand soap. At a minimum I spend a $1 on a hand soap at the Dollar Tree. For the same $1 you can get a body wash that is double or triple the ounces of what the soap is. Thus getting a minimum of 4-5 refills for your soap. You can also do this with nicer body washes such as Dove or Oil of Olay, and get a softer feel to your soap. Or, you can just put 2-3 squirts of it into your mixture and get the same effect.

The other thing I learned while learning how to make homemade hand soap is that the dispenser matters. The store bought hand soap dispensers give you a whole lot more soap than you actually need to get your hands clean. Hence, the globs of soap in the sink.

What I did is went to Walmart, and purchased a lotion dispenser for $1.88. I put my soap mixture into the lotion dispenser. The reasoning for this is that lotion dispensers put out less than a typical soap dispenser. I found the lotion dispensers put out the perfect amount of soap.

how to make hand soap out of bar soapAnother trick is learning to make homemade liquid soap out of left over pieces of bar soap. To do this get a glass jar. This can be an old pickle jar that’s been washed or ran through the dishwasher. Or, get a mason jar or any decorative jar of your choosing.

Put a 1/4 of a cup of water into your jar. Add your soap pieces into the water. Next, you want to purchase plastic beads with holes in them. You can get them in the craft section of the Dollar Tree for $1. Now add the beads into your jar and stir gently. Every so often give your jar a stir, that’s it ! As you get more soap pieces just add them to your jar with a little more water.

This will make thick liquid, so you just add a little water accordingly to get the desired consistency. If you don’t want to add more soap pieces to the jar. You can just start a new jar. Especially if you have different brands of soaps that you don’t want to mix.

quick homemade hand soap recipe
Get two bars of your favorite bar soap, and grate both of them. Next, boil 10 cups of water in a large pan. Once the water is boiling, add your shredded soap into the pot. Turn the heat down to medium. Slowly stir until the soap is dissolved. You can do one of two things. You can let it cool, and use it at this stage. Or, you can add 5-10 cups of cold water if you want the soap more liquidy. That’s the recipe for how to make homemade hand soap.
